Help & answers
Questions, answered.

The recovery experience
How are massage programs personalized for each user?
A 3D point-cloud scan maps shape and posture, and AI with on-board sensors adapts pressure and focus to each body in real time — then remembers you for next time, so the recovery fits a little better every visit.
How does the recovery bed work?
Self is a robotic recovery bed: a precision percussion device on a six-axis arm, guided by software that adapts pressure to each member's body and preferences.
Members lie down, select their program, and adjust intensity in real time. The system runs autonomously — your staff don't need to operate it during sessions.
Does the percussion device cause discomfort?
The percussion device is designed to provide a comfortable massage experience. Users can adjust the intensity to their preference, and the device has built-in sensors to prevent excessive pressure that could cause discomfort.
How much clothing is required?
Sessions are designed to be used fully clothed — no changing rooms required. Many members prefer removing their shirt for upper-body programs; either way, we recommend sanitising wipes so users can wipe the table after each session.
Is the recovery bed suitable for everyone?
Most members can use it, from regular gym-goers to those who simply want relaxation. People with specific medical conditions should consult their doctor first — the same as with any massage or recovery treatment.
How much noise does the recovery bed produce?
It runs quietly — around normal conversation level (~40–50 dB). The arm is nearly silent; most of the sound comes from the percussion device during active treatment.
How customizable are the sessions?
Every session adapts to the member: intensity, speed, and target areas can be changed mid-session from the touchscreen or remote.
Each member gets a personalised program after an initial body scan with a Self Therapist (about 2–15 minutes). They can book follow-ups to refine it as their needs change.
Is it similar to a human massage?
In both cases, you achieve relaxed muscles and a stress-relieving feeling, regardless of whether the massage is by a human or a robot. A big advantage of this robotic massage is that you keep all your clothes on during the entire treatment, so there is no time to change clothes or embarrassment issues.
What makes this better than traditional human massage?
The recovery bed delivers consistent, personalised pressure every session, runs without breaks, and members can book online 24/7. No therapist scheduling, no changing rooms, no variable quality between practitioners.
For operators, that means predictable cost, scalable throughput, and ancillary revenue human massage can't match on a busy gym floor.
What is percussion massage?
Percussion is a very pleasant massage therapy that vibrates and loosens muscles with a foam pad.
Can users customize the massage intensity and patterns?
Yes, users can easily customize the massage intensity, speed, and patterns via the intuitive touchscreen interface or the remote control.
Is the recovery bed safe to use?
Yes. The recovery bed is designed for unsupervised commercial use. Built-in sensors monitor pressure and movement; the system stops if something unexpected happens.
The percussion device is certified for therapeutic use, and the system complies with EU safety standards including CE marking.
What maintenance is required?
Day-to-day care is simple: wipe high-touch surfaces with disinfectant after each session. The bed is designed for easy cleaning.
We handle the rest remotely — software updates, diagnostics, and scheduled hardware maintenance are included in your service agreement. We typically visit on site about once a year for wear items.
How is it compared to traditional massage?
Our massage is very different than traditional massage. There are pros and cons. The con is it doesn't feel like human hands. Some pros include you are completely in private, and have more control of the experience.
Can multiple programs be created for a single user?
Yes, multiple massage programs can be created to suit different preferences or needs, and users can easily select between them on the robot’s interface.
Can users update their massage programs if their needs change?
Yes, users can schedule follow-up sessions with the Self Therapist to adjust their massage programs. This ensures continued effectiveness and personalization.
Where can I try it?
You can try it at our public locations in Copenhagen. We also work with partner clubs across Scandinavia, Germany, and the UK — contact us to find a site near you or to arrange a pilot at your club.
What are the benefits of a recovery bed?
For your members: consistent pressure, total privacy, no changing clothes, and recovery on their schedule.
For your club: a differentiated amenity, ancillary revenue, 24/7 availability without extra staff, and usage data to help you optimise pricing and placement.
Who can benefit from a recovery bed?
Gym members, boutique studio clients, wellness guests — anyone who trains hard or sits long and wants reliable recovery.
It's especially valuable for operators who want a premium, scalable amenity without scaling headcount.
What safety certifications does the recovery bed have?
The system complies with EU and international safety standards, including CE marking. The percussion device is certified for therapeutic use.
How do I book an appointment?
To book an appointment you simply go to self.io/book If you are not already logged in you will need to enter your email and name, and only the introductory sessions will be available to book. If you are logged in already, you can book all sessions with minimum friction.
Is it like a massage chair?
Similar to the chair, our product can also be enjoyed independently. But the chair is designed for a standard body and can therefore feel uncomfortable at times. Our product, on the other hand, is tailored with a personal profile for each user using computer vision, AI and sensors. This difference is huge because we believe that a massage should feel great every second for every body.
Read more about our product for details.
How hygienic is the recovery bed?
Surfaces are easy to clean, with replaceable covers for high-contact areas. Members can use disinfectant wipes between sessions; your team follows a simple daily wipe-down routine.
How long is a session?
A session is 15 minutes on average, with a short 5–10 minute buffer between bookings so the next person can start fresh.
Pricing & commercials
How much does it cost?
Two ways: lease Self all-inclusive for one flat monthly cost — around €1,416 per month per unit, everything included — or buy the unit outright from around €65,000 and own the asset. You set what members pay and keep the margin.
See full pricing for the breakdown.
Can we use our own badges to check-in?
Yes. We can map your existing member cards or access credentials (NFC or RFID) so members check in seamlessly at the recovery room.
Can we brand the recovery bed for our club?
Yes. The recovery bed can be customized with your club's branding, such as logos and colours. We can also tailor certain features — massage routines, room signage, and member-facing interfaces — to fit your brand.
How much does a recovery bed cost?
Most clubs choose the all-inclusive lease at €1,416 per month per unit — hardware, platform, servicing and support in one number. Alternatively, you can buy outright from around €65,000 per unit and own the asset, with the Self Platform subscription at €400 per unit per month to keep it running.
You set what members pay. See full pricing or contact us for a quote.
Do you set what members pay?
No — you do. Many clubs charge around €35/month as a membership add-on or €15 per 15-minute session, because that's working today at leading clubs. The final member price is entirely your call, and every euro above your monthly cost is profit.
Who is this product designed for?
Self is built for fitness chains, clubs, wellness operators, and distributors who want to offer members a premium recovery service — without staffing a massage room.
If you run high-traffic floors and care about retention, differentiation, and ancillary revenue, the recovery bed is designed for you.
Can the robot operate 24/7?
Yes, the robot can be used 24/7, we adjust the times according to your needs.
Can we offer membership discounts or packages?
Yes, the robot supports flexible pricing models, including memberships, bulk session discounts, and loyalty programs, making it ideal for gyms and wellness centers.
How does it improve member experience and retention?
Members get on-demand recovery that feels personal every time — without booking a therapist or changing clothes. That drives repeat use, word of mouth, and a reason to stay (or upgrade) membership.
Operators tell us the recovery bed becomes one of the most talked-about amenities on the floor.
What are the financial benefits for a club?
The recovery bed turns floor space into ancillary revenue: you set the price per session, run it without a therapist on payroll, and keep margins that human massage can't match at scale.
Operators also use it to differentiate from competitors and support membership retention — both of which protect long-term revenue.
Can we use our own booking system?
Yes. We can integrate with your existing room or resource booking system, or provide our own booking platform. Members can book via app or drop in when the room is free — whichever fits your floor.
What do we need to provide on site?
A dedicated space of roughly 2×3 metres, a standard 230 V outlet, and reliable Wi‑Fi for the platform. We handle installation and staff onboarding as part of deployment.
How can we market the recovery bed to members?
You can promote it through:
In-club signage showcasing the benefits
Social media campaigns with recovery-focused content
Launch events offering complimentary first sessions
Membership packages that include discounted or bundled sessions
We also offer marketing templates you can customize for your brand.
How does buying and financing work?
You can acquire Self in two ways:
Lease — all-inclusive: one flat €1,416 per month per unit. The Self Platform subscription is built in — no separate service contract.
Buy outright: purchase from around €65,000 per unit (better per-unit pricing at volume), own the asset, and finance through your preferred lender if you wish — we can help source a finance partner. The Self Platform subscription (€400 per unit per month) is required on both paths; on a purchase it sits alongside your capital cost.
Self does not provide leasing directly for buy-out finance; terms sit with you and your lender. Contact us to discuss which path fits your sites.
What's included when I lease?
Everything: the robot, delivery and installation, the Self Platform subscription, all servicing and maintenance, ongoing R&D (new massage modalities and an ever-improving recovery AI), 24/7 technical support and monitoring, staff training, your launch kit, and the member booking and payment tools.
There's no upfront capital cost — one all-inclusive monthly cost per unit. If you buy outright instead, delivery, installation and training are included in the purchase; the platform subscription keeps the unit running at €400 per unit per month.
Are new features included in our pricing plan?
New software features are always included. Most hardware upgrades are included, but some may require a small additional one-time payment.
How does the recovery bed fit our member offering?
It complements training, classes, and spa services with a self-serve recovery amenity members can use before or after a workout — on their schedule.
You can bundle sessions into membership tiers, sell them à la carte, or use them as a premium perk for higher tiers.
Can we pilot before committing?
Yes. For larger rollouts we can arrange a pilot at your club so your team and members experience the recovery bed before you commit to a full order. Pilot terms — including deposit, scope, and credit against a production order — are set out in your commercial proposal.
Contact us to discuss a pilot at your site.
How do members access and pay for sessions?
Members book through the Self app or your integrated booking system — or drop in when the room is available. You decide the commercial model: include sessions in membership tiers, sell them à la carte, or offer bundles and loyalty pricing.
Payment can run through your existing club systems or Self's platform, depending on how you set it up.
What revenue can a club expect per unit?
Revenue depends on your pricing, footfall, and how you package sessions. A busy unit can run around 1,400 sessions per month — at even a modest per-session price, that adds meaningful ancillary income on top of membership fees.
Use our ROI calculator to model your scenario, or contact us for a proposal with volume pricing.
What financing options are available?
If you buy outright, you can finance the asset with your preferred lender and keep it on your own balance sheet; Self can help source a finance partner if needed. Self does not provide leasing directly, so terms sit with you and your lender.
If you lease all-inclusive, there is no upfront capital — one flat €1,416 per month per unit covers hardware, platform and support. Your sales contact will walk through the options that fit your sites.
Is there a long contract?
We keep terms flexible and offer short, paid pilots so you're never locked in before you've seen the demand. Your sales contact will walk through the options that fit your sites.
Can I buy the unit outright?
Yes. You can purchase and own the unit as a capital asset — from around €65,000 per unit, with better per-unit pricing at volume. Delivery, installation and training are included, and you can finance it through your own lender (we can help source one). The Self Platform subscription then keeps it running at €400 per unit per month.
What is the Self Platform subscription?
The cloud, software, support and ongoing R&D behind every unit — booking and payments, premium 24/7 remote support, monitoring & reporting, and a steady stream of new massage modalities plus a recovery AI that gets smarter at every body, every session.
It's included when you lease; if you buy outright it's €400 per unit per month. A live unit always runs on the platform, so it applies on both paths — it's what keeps Self earning, and improving.

What materials are used in the construction of the robot?
The robot is constructed with high-grade aluminum and durable plastics to ensure longevity and reliability. The percussion device is made with medical-grade materials for safety and comfort.
Does the robot require supervision during operation?

How many sessions can a unit handle per day?
Around 1,400 sessions a month per unit — based on roughly 15.6 hours open daily across 30 days at 3 sessions per hour (15-minute sessions with a short buffer). That's about 40–50 sessions a day in a busy club. We add units as demand grows so no single unit is overworked.
Do you store sensitive information?
Massage session data is decoupled from member profile data, so it contains no personally identifiable information. Member data is stored securely in the cloud following modern security and privacy standards, and we are fully GDPR compliant.
Can the robot track usage statistics?
Yes, the robot provides detailed usage reports, including the number of sessions, session durations, and user preferences. This data helps optimize wellness programs.
Does it use AI?
Yes, it uses computer vision, sensors and AI to constantly improve with each massage. It also learns from your settings every time to always give you the best massage suited to your wishes. Your data is stored securely and is only accessible for your personal massage profile.
Are you GDPR compliant?
We treat privacy and safety with absolute respect. Yes, we are fully GDPR compliant. Member data is stored securely on servers located in Europe.
What power supply does the recovery bed need?
A standard 230 V outlet. Energy consumption is low, so running it through a full club day is cost-efficient.
How fast can you deliver?
From order confirmation, allow up to around 1.5 months for delivery and deployment at your site — sometimes less if we have stock. Installation on site typically takes a few hours once we arrive.
Contact us to check current lead times for your region.
Do you offer software updates or upgrades?
Yes — through the Self Platform subscription. New massage modalities and a recovery AI that improves every session land on every unit automatically. It's ongoing R&D, not just maintenance — the product keeps getting better long after install. Included when you lease; required at €400 per unit per month when you buy outright.
What is the lifespan of the recovery bed?
With regular servicing and our service agreement, we expect an asset life of 7–10 years under normal commercial use. Software updates and periodic inspections keep performance on track throughout.
What is required for installation?
The recovery bed needs a standard power outlet and approximately 2×3 metres of clear floor space with Wi‑Fi coverage. Our team handles installation, deployment, and staff training on site — typically within a few hours.
What support and service levels do you provide?
A 12-month warranty from installation, 95% platform uptime per unit per month, a 2-hour initial response and a 4-hour non-hardware resolution target. Support runs weekdays 09:00–20:00 and weekends 10:00–17:00, via email, phone and WhatsApp. In practice we're usually faster — but those are the commitments we stand behind.
What space and power does a recovery bed need?
About 4 m² (roughly 1.53 × 2.1 m) and a standard 230V power socket, with ethernet preferred. There's no construction or dedicated room required — and if you have no floor to spare, the Recovery Pod is a self-contained enclosure you simply plug in.
We handle delivery, installation, and staff training — on-site setup typically takes a few days per unit.
What is the Recovery Pod?
A self-contained acoustic enclosure that houses the entire Self system. It ships ready to use — plug in power and ethernet, no construction required — which makes it ideal for deploying into hotels, malls, offices and other spaces without a dedicated treatment room.
